There are many different ways of identifying those community groups and a number of obvious means of differentiation. The city can boast substantial Polish, Irish, Jewish and Chinese communities and one of the long-term aims of Virtual Manchester will be to detail those various histories to present an accurate picture of the reasons which draw various groups to this city, and the ways in which those “foreign” people became assimilated in to the city, becoming proud Mancunians while still retaining the traditions of their forefathers.
One of the most vibrant of these groupings is the Italian community. For reasons of work most of the Italians who came to Manchester settled in or near to the Ancoats area of the city, immediately north of the city centre.

The Irish Free State Constitution[ edit ] Irish Free State passport cover as issued holder’s name removed ‘Request’ page of the Irish Free State passport as issued in Irish citizenship originates from Article 3 of the Constitution of the Irish Free State which came into force on 6 December , however Irish citizenship applied only domestically until the enactment of the Twenty-sixth Amendment on 5 April which applied it internationally.
The Article also stated that “the conditions governing the future acquisition and termination of citizenship in the Irish Free State [ While the Constitution referred to those domiciled"in the area of the jurisdiction of the Irish Free State”, this was interpreted as meaning the entire island. The two Houses exercised that right within two days of the Constitution coming into force on 6 December However, the Irish authorities repeatedly rejected the idea that its citizens had the additional status of"British subject”.
The reference to ‘common citizenship’ in the Oath means little or nothing. There is not, in fact, ‘common citizenship’ throughout the British Commonwealth: Using an Irish Free State passport abroad, if consular assistance from a British Embassy was required, could lead to administrative difficulties. Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act [ edit ] The Constitution provided for citizenship for only those alive on 6 December No provision was made for those born after this date.
As such it was a temporary provision which required the enactment of a fully-fledged citizenship law which was done by the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act This Act provided for, among other things: Irish citizenship by birth for anyone born within the Irish Free State on or after 6 December ; Irish citizenship by descent for anyone whose father was an Irish citizen at the time of his or her birth, provided such birth was registered in register of Northern-Ireland- or foreign births; a naturalisation procedure; and automatic denaturalisation for anyone who became a citizen of another country on or after reaching 21 years of age.
The provision of citizenship by descent had the effect, given the interpretation noted above, of providing citizenship for those in Northern Ireland born after 6 December so long as their father had been resident anywhere in Ireland on said date.

Robert Tressell The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists 19th century onwards[ ed[ edit ] most significant exodus followed the worst of a series of potato crop failures in the s – the Irish Potato Famine. It is estimated that more than one million people died and almost the same again emigrated. A further wave of emigration to England also took place between the s, and s by Irish escaping poor economic conditions following the establishment of the Irish Free State.
This was furthered by the severe labour shortage in Britain during the mid th century, which depended largely on Irish immigrants to work in the areas of construction and domestic labour. The extent of the Irish contribution to Britain’s construction industry in the 20th century may be gauged from Sir William MacAlpine’s assertion that the contribution of the Irish to the success of his industry had been ‘immeasurable’.
Ireland’s population fell from more than 8 million to just 6. A century later it had dropped to 4. By the late 19th century, emigration was heaviest from Ireland’s most rural southern and western counties.

Share via Email A find from the archaeological dig of the area that housed Manchester’s poor in the 19th century. In , the Manchester Guardian — as this paper was then known — published a series of articles on the city’s slums, opening with a scene of 18 adults and several babies squeezed round a single fireplace. Along with Engels’ account, the newspaper’s archive reports proved influential in the decision to investigate this site. And, not one to leave an investigation unfinished, the Guardian has today returned to the same streets Miller, Dantzic and Angel near the city’s Victoria Station.
Soon I’m kneeling on the ground in an area where Engels described “cattle-sheds for human beings”. Archaeologists are uncovering some of the worst of these slums, the subdivided cellars where people shared beds or slept in doorways while pigs ate human waste in alleys above. A collection of rubbish — bottles, a woman’s shoe, broken crockery — lies on the dirt before me. Little more than a century ago, this part of Manchester, then the powerhouse of the industrial revolution, was as near to hell on earth as you are likely to get in peacetime.
The poor, including thousands who fled the Irish potato famine around , came here for the work. Many of them would have had jobs in a large Arkwright mill on the edge of this site. They suffered industrial injury, cholera, TB and typhus; consumed adulterated food and contaminated water; and lived in a maze of wet, filthy, light-deprived rooms and passages. At the end of Dantzic street was a stone-flagged area that became a playground in the s LS Lowry painted it as Britain at Play in The stone flags were to stop illegal excavation and sale of the soil for fertiliser: By the s the houses had gone, through a combination of slum clearance and wartime bombing.
